Robin Williams returns to series television this Thursday, Sept. 26 with The Crazy Ones, co-starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. Most of Williams’ other work has been in feature films, but he’s no stranger to the small screen, either. We’ll revisit some of his classic work and maybe some you didn’t even know about to prepare you for his triumphant return.
5) In the Wild “Dolphins with Robin Williams”

In the Wild was a series that premiered in 1992 and featured top-level celebrities who interacted with various elements of the wild. In this episode, William frolicked with dolphins, utilizing his trademark wit to make the show something special. At around the six-minute mark, he informs us that dolphins are descendants of cows. You won’t want to miss it!

We’re betting most of you have at least some knowledge of the series that propelled Robin Williams to the dizzying heights of success, Mork and Mindy. But did you know Williams created the character of Mork on Happy Days by interacting with The Fonz? Given Williams’ thriving career, it’s almost hard to believe that it was just prior to the fourth season of Mork and Mindy that he made his first appearance on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson. Here’s a clip from his first time in the chair in 1981. Carson explains that Williams doesn’t do many outside performances due to performance anxiety.

Many an actor has taken on the role of a man disguised as a woman, but rarely have they been as successful as Williams’ portrayal of Mrs. Doubtfire, an actor who takes drastic measures to spend time with his children, who he’s lost custody of to his ex-wife, played by Sally Field. Williams won a Golden Globe in 1994 for his performance in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture — Comedy or Musical category.

Williams starred as Adrian Cronauer, an irreverent Armed Forces DJ sent to Vietnam who shakes up the status quo. He might bring smiles to the faces of the troops, but his superiors find the new brand of entertainment a bit left of center. This 1987 performance earned Williams a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture — Comedy or Musical category and his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role. People were finally taking the talents of Robin Williams seriously.
