10 on Top MTV host Lenay Dunn takes a look back at 2013 and shares what she felt were the best song lyrics of the year.
When I was little, I used to sing along to songs without really knowing what I was saying. I probably didn’t even have the words right half of the time, but I would still belt it out. I guess today I still do that to some point; like, I still don’t know what Lady Gaga is singing in her chorus of “Applause.” But, wow, that song is powerful, and I love half-awkwardly singing along to it! Nowadays, though, I choose a lot of my favorite songs based on the lyrics and what emotion the artist was feeling when they wrote it. Here are my favorite song lyrics of 2013:

REASON: Sometimes music can express what you’re feeling better than you can yourself, and if you find the right song, you can just give up and listen. It’s refreshing and healing to do that sometimes!

REASON: I just think Lorde is a great lyricist. Her writing style is very unique! Her fascination with royalty and thrones is sprinkled throughout her songs, and I think her newfound feelings on success makes a little cameo in her lyrics here. It’s very cool.

FROM:Miley Cyrus‘ “Wrecking Ball”
REASON: This song is not very busy lyrically, and it works. A lot of sentences are repeated in the song, like this one above. It’s an emotional line, and there’s a lot of weight behind it. Repeating it makes it that much more powerful.
