November movie preview: SheKnows picks the flicks

The cinema is heating up as awards season is officially here! While many of November’s movies are making us hungry for popcorn, it’s really all about Katniss Everdeen and we can’t wait to “catch fire.”

Another cosmos-in-crisis flick, this action film stars Chris Hemsworth (a Norse god in his own right) as Thor and Natalie Portman, who returns as the fiery Jane Foster. In this Marvel-ous sequel, the god of thunder must persuade his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), the god of fire, to join forces and battle the evil villain Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) before the universe is obliterated. Thor: The Dark World opens Nov. 8.

Set in Nazi Germany, a young girl named Liesel (Sophie Nélisse) is sent to live with foster parents (played by Emily Watson and Geoffrey Rush) after the death of her mother and brother. Liesel learns to read and uses the magical fictional world of books to help her survive through extremely tough times. The Book Thief opens in limited release on Nov. 8.

Though a strange genetic quirk, 21-year-old Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson) learns he has inherited the ability to travel through time. When Tim falls in love with Mary (Rachel McAdams), he’s happier than ever until an unfortunate time traveling accident happens that changes their fate. This is a rom-com with a supernatural edge. About Time opens in limited release Nov. 1.

Imagine the future of Earth, during a post-alien invasion. Humans will do anything to prevent ghastly, insectlike monsters from returning, even if it means sending their children to battle them. Asa Butterfield and Romeo and Juliet’s Hailee Steinfeld star along with Harrison Ford and Sir Ben Kingsley in this zero-gravity thrill ride. Ender’s Game opens Nov. 1.
