NBC has big plans for Octavia Spencer. They’re resuscitating a classic mystery show just for her! Will you watch a Murder, She Wrote reboot?
Need a little mystery in your life, but prefer to see it served with a splash of kookiness? NBC wants to help you out. They’ve given the green light for a reboot of that classic mystery-solving, fabulously cheesy show Murder, She Wrote. Things have definitely changed, though. Most importantly, Angela Lansbury has been replaced with The Help‘s Octavia Spencer.

That’s not the only change being made to the show, either. The new Murder, She Wrote would be modernized to fit better with the times. According to TheHollywoodReporter.com, Spencer’s character will be a hospital administrator who, in her spare time, self-publishes her first murder mystery novel. Already that seems pretty modern, as self-publishing is such a huge fad right now. So many people are taking that route instead of holding out for a real publisher to buy, print and distribute their book. À la Castle, the writer will often become caught up in the big murders being splashed across front pages and tweeted about tirelessly. She’ll soon find herself right in the thick of the action, looking for inspiration and helping to solve the case.
Ronan Farrow also has a new television show >>
There’s absolutely no reason why the reboot shouldn’t do swimmingly. First, it will (probably) star the talented, Oscar-winning Spencer. The actress is a fairly large draw on her own. Nevertheless, the original series of Murder, She Wrote was also wildly popular. During its glory days, it averaged 23 million viewers on Sunday nights. During its 12-season run, the show earned Angela Lansbury an Emmy nomination every season it was on the air. Of the 10 Golden Globe nominations Lansbury also earned, she won four times. That’s quite impressive. It’s no wonder Murder, She Wrote is often dubbed one of the best television shows in history.

With so much success from the original series, it’s impossible to imagine the reboot turning into a flub. Add to it that the script will be penned by Alexandra Cunningham, who wrote for the massively popular Desperate Housewives, and the show should be a huge success.
It’s not possible for us to be any more excited about the possible return of Murder, She Wrote.
