Don’t be fooled by the commercials. Last Vegas isn’t merely a comedy about four older men throwing a bachelor party in Vegas. According to director Jon Turteltaub, there’s much more to this film.
“People are going to be surprised with how funny it is, how much emotion there is, how much story there is,” he says. “It would be a waste to have this cast and just make a silly comedy. You want more depth, and you’re going to get a lot more emotion than you think.”

And as for working with such a legendary cast, Turteltaub describes the experience in one word:
“Awesome!” he exclaims. “It was great, every day I was thinking, ‘Look how cool I am.’ I was so nervous, but I am always nervous on a movie — you were nervous about the movie.”
While the nervousness subsides and the cast gets to know one another better, Turteltaub was still surprised by a few things. For once, Kevin Kline was much more physically fit than he was expecting. But as for Robert De Niro:
“Robert De Niro surprised me at how much time he spends texting, I couldn’t believe it. He’s just on his cell phone all day, doing business… he has a busy life; he owns restaurants, hotels… that was a big surprise.”
As for Morgan Freeman?
“[He] was a huge surprise at what a sweet goofball he is,” he says. “I thought he was going to be mister serious, but it turns out he’s a little bit silly and playful. And Michael Douglas surprised me in that he was exactly how I thought Michael Douglas was going to be like: commanding, powerful, charismatic and in control.”
Last Vegas opens in theaters Nov. 1.
