Interestingly, most of this year’s CMA nominations for Song of the Year have to do with some mode of transportation. Listening to the 2013 CMA Song of the Year nominations is sure to get you moving!
“I Drive Your Truck”
This is Lee Brice’s memorial tune to a friend whose buddy drives his truck when he misses him. City folk may not get this, but those of us raised in the country do. Our trucks get us where the fun times and memories are, through pastures and up mountains. They take on the smell of their owners and become shrines. Stay tuned because we’ll be very surprised if Ford or Chevy doesn’t use this country tune for this football season’s Super Bowl.
“Mama’s Broken Heart”
Miranda Lambert brings it home with another “in your face” ditty that talks about how our mamas want us to “act like a lady” and “hide our crazy” — two things this broken-hearted vixen is not prepared to do. “Can’t get revenge and keep a spotless reputation.” No truer words have been spoken (or in this case, sung).
“Merry Go ‘Round”
New artist nominee Kerry Musgraves‘ “Merry Go ‘Round” talks about all the Marys in her small town — Mama’s hooked on Mary Kay, Brother’s hooked on Mary Jane, Daddy’s hooked on Mary two doors down. “We get bored so we get married.” Musgraves’ “Merry Go ‘Round” is a poignant tale of small town life, the foundation of all country music.

“Pontoon”
Country music’s summer anthem, Little Big Town‘s “Pontoon” gives us a glimpse into what country recreation is all about. “Who said anything about skiing?” Amen to that. Floating and barbequing is where the country goodness is. These kids know how to roll — or more correctly, float.

“Wagon Wheel”
Diehard fans of Old Crow Medicine Show might be thinking, “Why is that Hootie and the Blowfish dude nominated for country song of the year for Wagon Wheel?” Ketch Secor of OCMS finished the Bob Dylan sketch tune, renamed it “Mama Rock Me” and they’ve been performing it since 2004. It’s been remade several times, most recently by Darius Rucker. Rucker’s version is decidedly country, the OCMS version is more blue grass and the Mumford and Sons version is uniquely theirs.
