9 Ways to get into the holiday spirit >>
Dec. 1 — The Christmas Spirit, Hallmark 8/7c
Let’s face it: As cheesy as they can get, Hallmark still knows how to make great movies. This year, Hallmark is introducing a brand-new movie to its lineup: The Christmas Spirit. This Christmas flick stars Nicollette Sheridan as Charlotte, a renowned journalist who heads home to a small town for the Christmas holidays. Once there, she finds out her tiny town is set to accept a big (but shady) offer from a real estate developer. On her way to question the head honcho, Charlotte is in a car accident. Her spirit “wakes” to find her body in a coma. The movie follows her spirit as she continues her hunt to discover the developers’ plans and stop the townsfolk from approving the changes that would destroy her beautiful town.
Dec. 5 — The Sound of Music Live!, NBC 8/7c
Be prepared: This is not the Julie Andrews classic you’ve grown up with. Carrie Underwood is amazing, but she’s not Andrews. Is anyone? This version, starring Underwood as Maria and True Blood’s Stephen Moyer as Captain Von Trapp, is based on the original Broadway play, not the movie we all hold dear. Though the plot differences are nil, there will always be a difference in the way one performs onstage versus how one performs in a movie. Expect an amount of showiness in this very special airing. Still, if the past is any example, this is bound to be entertaining. Live airings of Broadway musicals are hardly a new thing. They’ve been done before with Peter Pan and Cinderella. Both of those were wildly successful, and of course, NBC is hoping for the same results with The Sound of Music.
Family Christmas movies to bring the holiday spirit >>
Dec. 13 — Toy Story marathon, ABC Family 4:30/3:30c
Toy Story may be just an animated movie from Disney Pixar, but a whole generation of us cried our eyes out during the “When She Loved Me” sequence during the sequel. The first Toy Story was released when many of us 20-somethings were roughly the same age as Andy, and because of that movie, our old toys have a completely new meaning/life that other generations may not ever understand. Share that love with your friends and loved ones by spending the evening with Woody, Jessie and Buzz for a marathon of all three movies, as well as for the special short movie, Toy Story of Terror. Which of your besties will have the boxed set wrapped up and under your Christmas tree with their name on it?
Dec. 20 — I Love Lucy Christmas Special, CBS 8/7c
If you haven’t already, it’s time to introduce the kids to Lucy Ricardo — and what better way to do it than during the already nostalgic Christmas season? CBS has taken two classic and well-loved episodes of I Love Lucy and given them a vintage colorization similar to what was often used in the ’50s, when these episodes originally aired. The two episodes include the rarely seen “Christmas Episode” and “Lucy’s Italian Movie” (featuring the iconic grape-stomping scene). They’ll air back-to-back and will include the original opening title sequence, and the ending credits will run at the top and bottom of the hour. Put on your PJs, fix some hot cocoa and prepare for an hour of giggles.
Dec. 24 and 25 — 24-hour Elf marathon, Starz 12/11c
Sure, other stations are playing Christmas-movie marathons — but no one else is showing Elf! Need more? We have seven words for you: “Buddy the elf! What’s your favorite color?”
