December movie preview: SheKnows picks the flicks

Christian Bale and Amy Adams play con artists entangled in a devious scandal involving a rogue FBI agent played by Bradley Cooper. The film also stars Jennifer Lawrence and is directed by David O. Russell, who brought us last year’s psychologically challenged romance Silver Linings Playbook. American Hustle opens Dec. 18.

Set in the near future, Her stars Joaquin Phoenix, who plays an introverted writer who falls in love with his computer’s operating system, voiced by Scarlett Johansson. Directed by the far-out Spike Jonze (Adaptation), the film also stars Olivia Wilde, Amy Adams and Rooney Mara. Her opens Dec. 18.

This is the true story of Mary Poppins’ author, P.L. Travers, played by Emma Thompson. It chronicles her struggle to relinquish control of the book rights to Walt Disney, played by Tom Hanks. Colin Farrell also stars in this unlikely tale of childhood trauma transformed into a life-affirming tale beloved by children of all ages. Saving Mr. Banks opens Dec. 20.

Directed by Martin Scorsese, this movie is based on the true story of hotshot stockbroker Jordan Belfort, played by a brown-haired Leo DiCaprio. This tale of financial excess, crime and punishment also stars Matthew McConaughey and Cristin Milioti. The Wolf of Wall Street opens Dec. 25.

With an all-star cast that includes Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts and Ewan McGregor, this dark yet humorous family drama may just have you appreciating your own family a little bit more during the holidays. Juliette Lewis and Abigail Breslin also star in this film that puts the “fun” back in dysfunctional. August: Osage County opens Dec. 25.
