We have probably already overused the words “amazing” and “mind-blowing” when describing Season 5 of The Vampire Diaries, and we’re only halfway through the season. But there is really no other way to say how hooked we are on this show. After Damon’s (Ian Somerhalder) big revenge reveal last episode, things are only going to get crazier on the midseason finale this week.
How bad is Damon’s decades-old revenge plot, you ask? Well, picture the classic Alexandre Dumas novel The Count of Monte Cristo. Then also picture the popular ABC TV show Revenge. Now add to that a healthy dose of Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus, and you’re beginning to understand just how twisted Damon’s mission is. Elena (Nina Dobrev) should go ahead and start scheduling the therapy sessions now.
The Vampire Diaries‘ shocking hookup spoiler >>
Damon has been killing every member of the Whitmore family, save one, for generations. Once that one grows up and starts a family, he begins the slaughter all over again. He even continued the massacre while he and Elena were dating. Granted, Damon has been through a lot and no one is saying he shouldn’t be upset about his treatment by the Augustine Society, but wow! It’s all so messed up.
Expect the crazy to continue this week on the show. According to The CW: “Damon realizes Elena is in danger and enlists Stefan’s (Paul Wesley) help to find her. The brothers pay a visit to Aaron, and Damon shocks Stefan by revealing his first-hand knowledge of Aaron’s family. In an attempt to stop Damon, Dr. Wes unleashes his secret weapon, forcing Damon to deal with a part of his past he thought was gone forever, as well as the consequences of his decades-long plan for revenge. Meanwhile, Elena is horrified by Dr. Wes’ confessions about the dark history of Whitmore College and his own ultimate goal. Finally, a frantic Katherine turns to Matt for help, until she realizes that Nadia may be the one to solve her problem.”
Here’s what we think that means.
Damon and Stefan go on a frantic hunt to save Elena and decide to use Aaron as the bait against Wes. Little do they know, Wes has a trick of his own in the form of Damon’s former BFF Enzo, who Damon thought was long dead. Since Enzo’s been tortured for more than 50 years now, he’s a little messed up in the head. Those revenge plans he made with Damon have twisted until Damon becomes the focal point of Enzo’s bloodlust because he blames Damon for his continued capture. Wes will release Enzo to retrieve Damon and keep Aaron safe. The two will have a bloody confrontation that just might end in an understanding. Enzo seemed like a pretty cool guy, after all, in the flashbacks from Damon’s past.

Damon will also reveal his killing spree to Stefan who will, understandably, be horrified like everyone else in the world.
It seems everyone will be joining in on the horrifying revelations fun because Wes will also make a confession to Elena that will send her into a frenzy. What could this ultimate goal be? We think he might have an evil mastermind plan to use all of the vampires as blood bags to rid the human world of disease and illness.
Finally, Katherine spends some bonding time with Matt, since the show has to figure out some way to keep his character relevant. Even that doesn’t seem to work, though, because Nadia will end up being the key to Katherine’s survival.
The midseason finale of The Vampire Diaries airs this Thursday, Dec. 12, at 8/7c on The CW.
