The Pope beats Miley Cyrus as Time‘s Person of the Year

Pope Francis, head of the Catholic Church, has been named Time‘s 2013 Person of the Year over a certain twerking pop star.

She may have twerked her way into our hearts, but she can’t twerk her way into Time. Miley Cyrus lost out to one holy dude for the honor of Time‘s 2013 Person of the Year.

Instead, the magazine named “The People’s Pope.” Pope Francis was given the nod “for pulling the papacy out of the palace and into the streets, for committing the world’s largest church to confronting its deepest needs, and for balancing judgment with mercy, Pope Francis is Time‘s 2013 Person of the Year,” Time said in an announcement.

As the Vatican’s first leader from the Americas, the Argentinian with a reputation for his commitment to the poor has given new hope to a disillusioned generation of churchgoers.

“What makes this pope so important is the speed with which he has captured the imaginations of millions who had given up on hoping for the church,” reads Time‘s cover story.

Pope Francis has raised eyebrows by speaking out against trickle-down economics and the judgment of homosexuals while advocating for a greater role for women in the church. One could say he came in like a wrecking ball, far more than Cyrus.

But never fear, Bangerz fans: The former Disney princess still made the top 10 along with a mixed group that also included President Barack Obama, NSA leaker Edward Snowden, Syria President Bashar Assad, Iran President Hassan Rouhani, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and gay rights activist Edith Windsor. She also nabbed a spot on Barbara Walters’ list of the Most Fascinating People of 2013.

So why was Cyrus — a mere pop star — included among such social and political powerhouses?

“Power is not just political. It can be cultural, it can be spiritual,” explained Time‘s Managing Editor Nancy Gibbs on the Today Show.

“At a time when you’re living with an explosion of exhibitionism since we all now carry cameras with us at all times, she is a symbol of the way we live.”
