Critics’ Choice Movie Awards favor 12 Years a Slave

The Critics’ Choice Movie Awards are following in the footsteps of SAG and the Golden Globes. Once again, 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle are in the lead with the most nominations.

The nominees for the 2014 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards have been announced. Unlike other award shows, they cover the gamut from artsy films to summer blockbusters. They leave no stone unturned. Despite the wide array of competition, 12 Years a Slave still managed to come out on top. The Steve McQueen drama earned 13 nominations, including Best Picture.

But 12 Years a Slave isn’t the only film on critics’ minds. David O. Russell’s American Hustle also scored 13 nominations, in most of the same categories. There are healthy showings from Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity with its 10 nominations, and The Wolf of Wall Street, Her, Captain Phillips and Nebraska all received six.

The Critics’ Choice Movie Awards have lighter categories such as Best Action Movie that gives The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Iron Man 3 some shine. One of the biggest surprises is Henry Cavill‘s nod for Best Actor in an Action Movie for Man of Steel.
