ABC Family is trying to revive the half-hour comedy format on its network with two new shows slated for 2014 release: Young & Hungry and Mystery Girls.
ABC Family has picked up Mystery Girls, starring Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling, as well as comedy series Young & Hungry, starring Emily Osment and executive produced by Ashley Tisdale.
ABC Family President Tom Ascheim said, “It’s great to start the new year and my tenure at ABC Family with the pickup of these two funny original series. ABC Family’s comedy lineup continues to resonate with our audience and I’m thrilled to boost that momentum by adding Mystery Girls and Young & Hungry, which are sure to become fan favorites.”

The network is trying its hand at comedy again. While shows like Pretty Little Liars and Switched at Birth have been huge successes, ABC Family has struggled to find its bearings with the half-hour comedy format. The revival of that sector for the 2014 year could either be a huge success for the network or a huge flop.
In our opinion, both shows sound promising.
We love a little 90210 reunion via Mystery Girls with Garth and Spelling. The show is about two former mystery detective TV starlets (in our minds we picture The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley) who are reunited to solve a real-life mystery later in life. A key witness in the investigation will only tell what he knows to the infamous Mystery Girls.

The other show, Young & Hungry sounds like an all grown-up version of a Disney comedy. It stars Osment (You’ll remember her as Hannah Montana‘s best friend back in the day. Don’t worry, she isn’t into the tongue thing like Miley Cyrus.) and is executive produced by another Disney TV alum Ashley Tisdale (High School Musical). The premise of the show follows Gabi (Osment) who is a young food blogger vying for a personal chef position to a wealthy young tech entrepreneur. Hmm, do we smell a little rom-com here?
The shows will both begin filming soon in Los Angeles, California, and are both set to premiere in 2014, though it’s unclear as of now whether they will be slated for summer or fall release.
