Modern Family‘s Nolan Gould: Julie Bowen is crazy

Modern Family cutie Nolan Gould gives us the inside scoop about the danger (aka hilarity) involved when working with zany Julie Bowen.

On ABC’s hit show Modern Family, 15-year-old actor Nolan Gould cracks us up as little Luke Dunphy, whose hijinks often center on his loving, adorably unglued parents, Claire and Phil Dunphy.

And in a case of life imitating art, Gould had us in stitches on the red carpet as well, spilling behind-the-scenes snafus about his on-set mom, played by Julie Bowen.

With a cast that also includes other top-notch comedic actors like Ed O’Neill, Sofia Vergara, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet, we can only imagine the funny shenanigans that happen during filming.

According to Gould, he has Bowen to thank for his craziest experiences working on Modern Family.

“I’d say the craziest was when she slammed my face into a bowl on accident,” laughs Gould. “We were sitting around before a take, and there was this bowl filled with, like, pancake batter, and she was like, ‘Nolan, smell that!'”

Can you guess what happened next?

“She pretended to hit my head, but I ended up slamming into the glass bowl [and] getting covered in pancake batter right before a scene,” the young actor explains, stifling a giggle. “So that was pretty crazy.”

Regardless, it’s clear that Gould enjoys working with Bowen — whether she’s “cursing a whole bunch” or dunking his head in pancake batter.

Modern Family, which airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on ABC, took home two trophies at the 2014 SAG Awards: Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (the latter for Ty Burrell).
