Grammys, Golden Globes and more: 15 BEST award show moments in January

With five award shows in January, this has been a month full of hilarious hosts, stirring acceptance speeches and gorgeous get-ups. We look back at 15 award show moments so good they deserve trophies of their own.

1

Two Broke Girls stars Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs may have been newbies on the hosting scene, but they proved they’ve got what it takes. Behrs Baby Got Back skit was a highlight of the night.

2

How does that old expression go? You win some, you lose some. Vampire Diaries cuties Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder took the stage at the People’s Choice Awards to accept the trophy for Best Chemistry… and to joke “It’s a good thing it’s not awkward” about their characters continuing to date on the show after the couple split in real life.

3

Proving, once again, he is a god among men, Robert Downey Jr. totally stole the show when he took the stage to accept his award for Favorite Action Movie Star. The Iron Man actor sidled up to the stage and requested reverb, a spotlight and triumphant music to get into character.

4

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler kept the zingers flying all night long as co-hosts of the Golden Globes, but our favorite of the night by far was their barb at Leonardo DiCaprio, “And now, like a supermodel’s vagina, let’s all give a warm welcome to Leonardo DiCaprio.” And, naturally, Leo’s reaction was priceless.

5

OK, so technically this happened before the show, but in our minds it still counts under the Golden Globes’ umbrella. Jennifer Lawrence, looking stunning and being silly as always, crept up on Taylor Swift as she was being interviewed by Ryan Seacrest. The result? Most epic celebrity photobomb ev-er.

6

As the nominees for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Comedy or Musical were read, Amy Poehler perched comfortably on U2 frontman Bono’s lap as he playfully massaged her shoulders to calm her nerves. When Poehler’s name was called, securing her first Golden Globe, the funny lady planted a big ol’ liplock on Bono in celebration.

7

What wasn’t there to love about Sandra Bullock at the Critics’ Choice Awards? During her acceptance speech for Best Actress in an Action Movie, the 48-year-old beauty dropped an F-bomb when a technical glitch interfered with her speech. “I’m an action hero! You do not do that to an action hero,” she joked.

8

We love us some Jared Leto, and he definitely didn’t disappoint at the Critics’ Choice Awards. The amazing actor macked on Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke on the red carpet, brought his mom as his date, dedicated his award to all those affected by AIDS and HIV and shared an inside joke with Matthew McConaughey during his acceptance speech. Swoon.

9

Lifetime Achievement Award winner Rita Moreno may just have been the most entertaining winner of that award to ever grace the Critics’ Choice stage. She sang, she danced, she dropped the F-bomb — she could not have been more vivacious (or cuter!) if she tried.

10

If you didn’t know who Lupita Nyong’o was before she won a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress, odds are you won’t forget the 12 Years a Slave actress’ name now! Overcome by emotion at first, the newcomer gathered her wits about her to deliver a lovely speech, with a killer punchline — joking that her dad didn’t know who Brad Pitt was, but he was glad she got a job.

11

Cate Blanchett‘s acceptance speech at the Critics’ Choice Awards will go down in history for two very different reasons. First, when she realized she was being rushed, she deadpanned, “Matthew McConaughey spoke about Neptune, I think I can have five seconds!” Second, and far more embarrassingly, she kind of, um, made some colorful subconscious motions with her award.

12

What a way to start the Grammys, eh? We were pretty psyched when we heard Beyonce and Jay Z would be kicking off the show, but we had no idea what we were in store for. Let’s just say their sultry performance of Drunk in Love has people thinking Blue Ivy may be a big sis in about 9 months.

13

In one of the most beautiful moments we’ve ever seen at any award show, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis — with vocalist Mary Lambert — gave a riveting performance of their marriage equality anthem Same Love as Queen Latifah officiated the mass wedding of 33 couples (including Ryan Lewis’ sister!). To make the moment even more memorable, pop queen Madonna joined them in serenading the newlyweds.

14

When Kendrick Lamar and Imagine Dragons hit the stage for a mash-up of M.A.A.A.d City and Radioactive, the crowd went wild… literally. Nearly everyone was up out of their seats dancing for the electric performance, and none more so than Taylor Swift.

15

And then there was this Taylor Swift moment, when she mistakenly thought she won the award for Album of the Year when it was really Daft Punk. Still, she wasn’t the only one who got confused — just look at those dudes around her. They put Swift’s shocked face to shame.
