Major spoilers ahead! Game of Thrones Season 4 is shaping up to be the most intense so far. What could be worse than The Red Wedding, you ask? The Red Wedding was just the beginning.
Judging by the books, Season 4 of Game of Thrones is about to mix things up in Westeros yet again. Kings will fall. Enemies will become allies. Most importantly, there will be dragons. And lots of Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) being awesome.
Of course, we understand if you don’t want to wait until the Season 4 premiere to find out what’s next. Luckily, we have George R.R. Martin‘s books, specifically A Song of Ice and Fire, to turn to for answers. So far, the television show has stayed true to the major plot points in the books. If that holds true into Season 4, there are going to be quite a few noteworthy events that just might make The Red Wedding a distant memory.
SPOILER ALERT: Do not, we repeat, do not continue reading unless you want major, tear-jerking, mind-blowing spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 4. We spill on key plot points below based on the events of the books.
1. Joffrey will die
Yes, that’s right. The little devil will finally get what’s coming to him, on his wedding day no less. Following his nuptials with Margaery, the young king will be poisoned. Tyrion will be blamed for the murder, but is he really guilty? He certainly has motive.
2. Shae will betray Tyrion
Cersei (Lena Headey) will get her hands on Tyrion’s love, Shae, and use her against him for all she’s worth. Upon threat of death, Shae will testify against Tyrion making him look all the more guilty in Joffrey’s murder. This is the most gut-wrenching scene because it plays on all of Tyrion’s insecurities. Think Shakespeare’s tragedies and you’ll begin to grasp the absolute devastation of this betrayal.

3. Sansa will escape King’s Landing
With the help of Littlefinger, Sansa will flee to the Vale where her Aunt Lysa Arryn resides. If you’ll remember, she’s the crazy one that is protected because she lives so high above ground on a mountain top. She has an even crazier son and tried to shove Tyrion through a hole in her floor, which would have seen him dropping thousands of feet to his death. Needless to say, Sansa still isn’t exactly safe at the Vale either. Especially because Littlefinger will be joining her there and thinks Sansa looks a lot like Catelyn, who was his flame back in the day.
4. Jamie will become the good guy
Well, he’ll kind of become the good guy, at least. There’s still that whole “family duty” nonsense that will hang over his head. When he returns to King’s Landing, he won’t want to be a part of Cersei’s games anymore. His time fighting for his life has given him new perspective. And, of course, there’s Brienne. Those two will become friends of a sort, and she definitely helps him see things differently too.

5. Catelyn will return from the dead
This is the biggest and most unexpected shocker of all. Remember how Beric Dondarrion explained that he could be brought back to life? Well, he does his spell-thing on Cat’s body, giving up his life for hers. She takes over the Brotherhood Without Banners and goes on a revenge rampage against the Lannisters and the Freys. This is the plot point we’re most unsure whether the show will be continuing. Michelle Fairley, who plays Catelyn, has said that her contract on the show expired after Season 3, and we won’t be seeing her again. Could she just be trying to mislead viewers?
Game of Thrones Season 4 premieres on HBO on April 6.
