A couple that works together, stays together. Or at least that’s the case with Nelly Furtado. The pop star’s at her best when collaborating with her husband.

Award-winning singer and songwriter Nelly Furtado loves making music. Luckily for her, so does her husband Demacio “Demo” Castellon. The duo has worked together on several projects including her hit album Loose and the Spanish-language release Mi Plan. Furtado recently spoke with People about her and Castellon’s unique partnership.

“It’s a healthy tension working together,” she says. “It doesn’t always go smoothly, of course, and it can be really challenging when there are differences of opinion, which of course happens. But good things always tend to come out of it, and that’s the whole point.”

Even though they enjoy collaborating, they give each other space to work on other projects. For example, Castellon spent most of 2013 recording and mixing Jay Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail and Madonna’s MDNA World Tour DVD. Furtado explains, “We make it work because he’s often doing his own thing. I go off and do my own thing, so it’s not like we’re working together all the time.”

What’s that old saying? Absence makes the heart grow fonder? Despite their busy schedules, they always manage to make each other a priority. “When we work together, he challenges me,” she says. “That’s what makes him so great in the studio. If it were an easy process, the final product wouldn’t be very good, but he helps me to reach a little bit further. He pushes my boundaries.”

Furtado returns to the studio later this year, and we can’t wait to hear what she and Castellon will cook up.
