The truth about Ward’s treachery continues to unfold, while the team follows Coulson on a quest to restore what is left of S.H.I.E.L.D. in “Providence.”
Is it just me or does it feel like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will never be the same show again? I was completely on board with everything going to heck, but now I’m feeling a bit confused. It might be because I didn’t see the latest Thor or Captain America films. At first it wasn’t a problem, but now I feel like I’m missing whole chunks of the story. I just don’t have any interest in the films and I didn’t think they were required viewing for this show, but now I wonder if I’m wrong.

I’m really, really trying to embrace evil Ward. Believe me, I am. I haven’t tried so hard to change my mind about something since I was a kid and my mom came home with the wrong cereal from the grocery story. The old Ward is like the yummy sugary cereal I wanted and the new one is the granola my mom brought home instead. There’s nothing wrong with the granola, but it just wasn’t what I was in the mood for, you know?

So now we know that Ward wasn’t being controlled by some malevolent brain control device or being manipulated by threats, as I hoped in my review of the last episode. He was sent in by Garrett to spy on Coulson’s team and gather intel for Garrett and Hydra. With a few choice words and actions (including jumping out of an airplane), he insinuated himself into the team and got every single one of them to trust him completely. But I still think that there’s a chance that he will be convinced of the fact that he’s actually a good man and that maybe his act wasn’t really an act at all. Though I can’t decide if that would be a good thing or a bad thing.

As for Coulson, it seems the bigger the you-know-what storm they throw at him, the more I like him. The fact that he followed his gut, despite all the doubt from his team, was incredibly endearing and I loved his whole speech in the snow. I hate to think how devastated he’s going to be when he finds out about Ward, but then again he’s been handling the news about May spying on him rather well, considering.
My favorite bits:
“You’re not clairvoyant?”
“Hardly.”
Simmons pointing out that Coulson’s orders weren’t so much orders as they were requests, now that there was no more S.H.I.E.L.D.
Fitz screaming like a howler monkey when the sparks started flying.
Finding it interesting that Coulson was giving Trip grief for being fooled by Garrett. Not realizing that he himself had been fooled by Ward.
Fitz’ eyes shooting bullets after Simmons demanded that Trip get to stay on the plane.
Coulson’s sad little “yay” when he found out they had the internet.
Trip pointing out that Coulson’s badge lighting up could be a trap because everything had been a trap up to that point. The man has a point.
Ward telling Raina about all the methods he used to get close to Coulson’s team. So creepy.
“I’m not going to hand over my weapon. You want to try and take it from me?”
“This is not good.”
“Bears. Did it find bears?”
“The last thing I want is for things to change.”
“Fitz, it’s too late for that.”
“We are not agents of nothing, we are Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”
