Asher Roth proves he’s a real man of mystery as he reveals some pretty quirky interests and points of view.
We sat down with Asher Roth and found out there’s a lot more to the “Tangerine Girl” rapper than just beer pong.

1. Golden retrievers make him bawl.
Well, at least one pup in particular. Roth admits that watching the movie Air Bud is a surefire way to make him cry. “He like loves that dog, then he makes him run away. He’s like, ‘You gotta go!’ It’s so sad.”
2. He’s not a fan of diarrhea of the mouth.
“You gotta know when to stop talking. Just in general,” the rapper said. “That’s genderless. You just got know when to be, ‘You know what? I’m going to sit here calmly right now.’ Listening, it’s huge.”
3. He really does love college.
Even the food. Roth revealed his favorite snack combo is vegetable soup and cottage cheese. Sounds like dorm grub to us.
4. He’s mastering the art of Zen.
The rapper said he has a couple of mantras he currently abides by: “Protect me from ego and fill me with love” and “unfurrow your brow,” which help him to relax and not take things too seriously. “Especially with social media, you get self-consumed. It’s not a good feeling. Living inside yourself is a ridiculous feeling.” One arena he allows his head to get big about is Twitter. Roth joked that he likes to just lay back and admire his own timeline. “It’s such a work of art,” he laughed.
5. He prefers to be incognito.
Despite massive success, Roth claims he doesn’t get recognized often, and he likes it that way. “There’s nothing worse than not being able to go out in public,” he said. “That’s the one thing I don’t understand about fame in general and celebrityism and like gawking over somebody else. It’s like they’re just a dude, or, like, just a woman.” He admits it’s flattering to be recognized every now and again, “but for the most part I need to be able to go to the grocery store,” he said.
6. Natalie Portman rocks his world.
“Every time I see her, I’m just like, ‘What?'” he gushed. Guess who will be first in line for tickets to the female-driven superhero flick Portman hinted at last fall?
7. Just call him a dancing machine.
According to Roth, the best way to beat the blues is to dance up a storm, and he’s all about the full body movement. “I start upper body, but as I get more comfortable with it, it goes down.”
8. He’s into rhyming, and not just of the rap variety.
Is the rapper influenced by similar artists who have helped forge a path for him, such as Eminem? Maybe, but Roth says he’s biggest influence is Dr. Seuss. “He’s legit,” the “Last of the Flohicans” singer said.
9. James and the Giant Peach is his favorite book.
Roth claims to like “books that kind of capture your imagination. Telling a story that didn’t necessarily take place. Awesome character development also. Stuff you can relate to. Super metaphorical but at the same time pretty cool.” We’re wondering if he read Fifty Shades of Grey? The character development in that book was epic.
10. The man can pull Empire Records quotes out of thin air.
Really, it’s impressive. While speaking on an unrelated topic, he 360s to “‘shock me, shock me, shock me with that deviant behavior.’ What movie is that from?”
The guy reads, raps, loves Natalie Portman, cries at the thought of golden retrievers and is a fan of ’90s cinema. What more could a girl want?
