DJ E-Z Rock, who was born Rodney “Skip” Bryce in Harlem, was best known for his work with Base and their 1988 platinum-certified hit single “It Takes Two,” which sampled the James Brown-produced Lyn Collins 1972 hit “Think (About It).”

The tune would live on for years to come when Snoop Dogg, Girl Talk, and South Korean girl group 2NE1 sampled the song. “It Takes Two” even made its way to the big screen during a scene in Sandra Bullock’s 2009 romantic comedy The Proposal. After the success of the LP, the duo split up due to personal reasons and reunited in 1994 for the release of their sophomore effort Break Of Dawn.

Back in 2011, Base spoke about the influence the group had on pop and R&B acts, saying, “Well, I know definitely I was one of the first artists to do the hip-hop and R&B thing. When we did it, I just wanted to do something different. I didn’t want to do the same thing that the other groups were doing at the time. So we just did it that way and I really didn’t care what people said.”
