Tony Award nominations: NPH & Bryan Cranston are in

The Broadway theatre community has spoken! While some famous names were nominated for a Tony Award, many others were left of the list.

On Tuesday morning, the Tony Award nominations were announced and some familiar names were on that honored list. Neil Patrick Harris, Tony Shalhoub and Bryan Cranston are all celebrating today.

Harris was a shoo-in for best actor in a musical for his gender-bending role in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Shalhoub and Cranston find themselves competing against each other in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play category. Shalhoub stars in Act One and the former Breaking Bad actor stars in All the Way.

Other familiar faces who are nominated include Bridesmaids star Chris O’Dowd for Of Mice and Men, Idina Menzel for her leading role in the musical If/Then, Bunheads actress Sutton Foster for the revival of Violet and Cagney and Lacey star Tyne Daly for Mothers and Sons. Two shows earned the most nominations overall: A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder with 10 nods and Hedwig and the Angry Inch with eight nominations.

What is interesting about today’s nominations is how many names were left off of the list. James Franco, Denzel Washington, Michelle Williams, Daniel Radcliffe and Zach Braff were some of the big stars who didn’t receive a nod. Add Zachary Quinto, Michael C. Hall, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart and Rachel Weisz to those who were snubbed. It’s clear the Broadway community isn’t swayed by Hollywood heavyweights.
