Federer pulled out of the Madrid Open because of the due date of his children, and made the announcement on Twitter that they had arrived.
Mirka gave birth to twin girls Charlene Riva and Myla Rose back in July 2009. Federer announced their newest pregnancy on Christmas Eve 2013. But he didn’t announce there were actually two babies coming, or when they would arrive.
The 32-year-old tennis star made his priorities clear by canceling his appearance at the Madrid Open, but was aware he had disappointed his fans.
“I apologize to my fans and hope to be back in Madrid next year,” he told CNN. “I’ll be training near my home, and am excited to rejoin the Tour soon.”

The Swiss tennis pro was listed at No. 8 on Forbes 2013 list of Most Powerful Celebrities, and has won the Madrid Open three times. Federer is still No. 4 in the world, but he could quit at any time, and he knows what is important to him. Although he is expected to be back on the court for the French Open in three weeks, it’s still not clear if having newborns at home will take precedence.
“I’ve played enough tennis matches,” he said. “Missing a tournament or missing a match wouldn’t change anything for me.”
Congrats to the parents on the new additions to their family!
