Hey, SheKnows!

This past week has been crazy, but in the best way possible. Not only was I performing with Candace on the show, but I opened the show with my brand-new single, “Get My Name.”

My opening performance was definitely one of the most fun things I’ve ever done on this show. I’m so glad that my close friends danced with me and helped premiere it on the show. I’ve been working on this song for a long time, and I’m so glad I can finally share it with everyone.

Candace and I were safe last week, and that put us both in great spirits during rehearsals. This week, we danced the foxtrot. Last week, I mentioned the dance was suited to her personality, and it turned out to be one of Candace’s favorites. She really liked the choreography I put together, and we had some fun props to use during our piece. I feel like this week was a lot like acting for her — she had a lot of fun with the props, costume and dance all together. Candace really embedded the character, and because she had a role to play, she was really, truly confident and very much in her element. I keep telling her that it’s a turtle race, not a rabbit race, but she’s got her rollerblades on and making strides every single week. I’m really proud of the work Candace is doing each week on the show. She improves every single week and the judges’ comments get better and better.

The duel was really fun to work on this week, too. We love new challenges, and it was fun to be able to work closely with our good friends, Charlie and Sharna. I thought Charlie and Candace were great together! I was really impressed by how strong Charlie’s base was when he was lifting Candace. It was cool to learn from him about the lifting. I was also shocked at how well Candace moved from the lifts having no dance experience. It was truly amazing. It was the first time it had ever been done on the show before — two celebrities doing such a complicated lift sequence.

It was really sad to see Danica and Val go home this week. Danica is really great and we’re going to miss having her around every week.

Until next week…

Mark Ballas
