Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley realized his rocker lifestyle and excessive drinking had to end after he collapsed unconscious at his home and was raced to the hospital.
Sum 41’s frontman Deryck Whibley received a nasty wake-up call recently when he had to be hospitalized after his wild behavior and excessive drinking took a turn for the worse.
The 34-year-old pop rocker collapsed at his home and was unconscious before he was rushed to the hospital. Now, Whibley has decided to tell fans about his scary experience via his website.
“Hey everyone, it’s Deryck here. sorry I’ve been so M.I.A. lately, but I’ve been very sick in the hospital for a month and was pretty sick for a few weeks leading up to my trip to the hospital,” he wrote on the site.

“The reason I got so sick is from all the hard boozing I’ve been doing over the years. It finally caught up to me. I was drinking hard every day. I was sitting at home, poured myself another drink around midnight and was about to watch a movie when all of a sudden I didn’t feel so good.”
“I then collapsed to the ground unconscious. My fiancée got me rushed to the hospital where they put me into the intensive care unit. I was stuck with needles and I.V.’s all over.”
Whibley shared a photo of himself from his hospital bed that shows him hooked up to IVs and his arms filled with bruises. He explained that the scare has finally made him realize it is time to change his ways.

“My liver and kidneys collapsed on me,” he continued. “Needless to say it scared me straight. I finally realized I can’t drink anymore. If I have one drink the docs say I will die. I’m not preaching or anything but just always drink responsibly.”
And one person who is thrilled with the news that he has given up drinking is Whibley’s ex-wife Avril Lavigne.
The Canadian singer took to Twitter to show her support for her ex-husband, writing, “Spoke to @Sum41 Deryck today. I am so proud of him. He is family to me and always will be. #StayStrongDeryck.”
