Charlie Day gave a hilarious commencement speech to graduates of Merrimack College, but he also taught them an important lesson.
When you ask a comedian to receive an honorary doctorate, expect a funny speech in return. Actor Charlie Day did just that at Merrimack College’s graduation on Sunday.
The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star was his alma mater’s commencement speaker. He graduated from the North Andover, Massachusetts, college in 1998. Now that he’s officially a doctor, he said in jest, “I plan to begin writing my own prescriptions immediately.”

Prescription drugs aside, Day gave the graduates some food for thought when it came to a message about their next stage of life.
He shared, “I had a sense that maybe I could create an opportunity that was better than the ones offered to me.”
The actor told a story about how he and a few friends created an early version of his hit FX show while he was cast on the FOX sitcom Life on a Stick at the same time.
“Do I do Life on a Stick? Or do I make another bet on myself? And this time, my friends too,” questioned Day. “Do I make no money?”

While we have the answer to that question now, the Horrible Bosses star clearly took a big gamble on himself instead of the simple graduation message of, “I have expanded my mind, destroyed my liver, but I never gave up.”
His show has completed 10 seasons with two more in the works. Life on a Stick was canceled after only five episodes.
Day summed up, “Don’t wait for your break, make your break. Go make it happen for yourself.”
