Think of The Hundred-Foot Journey as the Fifty Shades of Grey for food. Replace Christian Grey with Masala, and the result is something just as decadent.

Get your summer lovin’ started with a book that’s just as steamy as a romance novel. That is, steamy because there’s always something cooking in the kitchen throughout this story. With its fairy tale quality and delectable characters, The Hundred-Foot Journey by Richard C. Morais is not a book to be missed. Plus, it’s being made into a feature film starring Helen Mirren. Though the movie promises to dish out a healthy serving of brilliance, we’ve got a few reasons why you should plan on picking up this novel before you see the story in theaters.
5 Mouthwatering books that mix food with fiction >>
1. For the descriptions of food
The New York Times’ Sunday Book Review pretty much hit the nail on the head when it said of this book, “Certain readers will want to skip ahead to the descriptions of food, as others do to sex scenes.” The descriptions are so vivid with colors and textures and smells, you’ll feel like you’re standing in the most complex of kitchens. And while we’re sure the movie will place a heavy emphasis on the cuisine, there’s no way just seeing the food on-screen could ever be as good as reading about it in this novel.

2. To immerse yourself in the culture
Understanding the cultural implications around this film is crucial. In fact, the first part of the book focuses on using food to set the stage of the social climate pre-World War II in Bombay, India. It isn’t just about different cuisine. It’s about cultures melding, blending and coming together. And not just French and Indian delicacies, either. The story uses a diverse range of food to blend histories and set the stage for an amazing story with a rich backdrop.

3. To fully appreciate the perfect casting
Just from the trailer we can already tell that the film has done a spot-on job of choosing its characters (though, admittedly, you can’t really go wrong with Helen Mirren), which are so central to the story. The book reads like a fairy tale with food as integral a part as any of the characters. The liveliness and diversity of this group will make a beautiful picture on-screen, and we can’t wait to experience it.
The movie, The Hundred-Foot Journey, will be released on Aug. 8, 2014, but you can pick up a copy of the book now on Amazon.
