The return date for Doctor Who and Peter Capaldi’s first official whole episode as the Doctor has finally been announced… sort of. Can you make it till August?

Are you ready to find out how Peter Capaldi will fare as the Doctor? Get to it: His “official” debut is in just months. BBC America released the most cruel of teasers ever: 14 seconds of fanfare and limited news. As a matter of fact, all we know is that Doctor Who will return in August. On which of the 31 days in the month Capaldi will make his appearance, BBC America is not yet sharing. We assume he’s ready to “geronimo” right into the position, though.

Capaldi officially took over Doctor duties from Matt Smith late last year, during the latest regeneration. During the special episode “The Day of the Doctor,” Smith was joined by his direct predecessor, David Tennant, and the War Doctor in an effort to save Gallifrey. During that scene, we saw a snippet of Capaldi as the next Doctor, coming to help save his home planet. (Actually, all 13 Doctors were present to save Gallifrey; not all the actors were physically there to represent their incarnations, however.) Then, of course, we saw Smith’s Eleventh Doctor regenerate into Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor during “The Time of the Doctor.” In both cases, however, Capaldi’s scenes were brief.

Fans of Who that may not have previously realized they were familiar with Capaldi had, in fact, seen him before. Capaldi guest-starred in the 2008 episode “The Fires of Pompeii,” when the Tenth Doctor and his companion, Donna, visited Pompeii just before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. At the time, Capaldi appeared as Lucius Caecilius Iucundus, and a Twelfth Doctor hadn’t even crossed anyone’s mind. Capaldi also guest-starred on an episode of the Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood. The actor is well-loved for other roles throughout his career and will no doubt be an excellent addition to the long line of men who have played the Doctor.
We can’t wait to see his first full episode, story arc and season, and we know they’ll all be fantastic. Now… if we can just make it until August for the return of Doctor Who.
