Casey Kasem’s wife stripped of power over his medical care

Casey Kasem is suffering from dementia, and his family is fighting over his well-being. His daughter won a big battle in a California court this week.

The fight for radio icon Casey Kasem continues. Kasem’s wife and children have been battling for custody of the 82-year-old, and his wife Jean Kasem was served with a temporary order that suspends her powers to determine his medical care, according to the Associated Press. The order came after Kasem’s daughter Kerri first filed a missing person report and publicly showed her growing concern over his health and welfare.

After Kasem seemed to go missing for days earlier this month, he was found in Washington state, where he is now. Kerri Kasem’s authority to determine her father’s medical care has been expanded.

However, Jean Kasem isn’t giving up easily. She did an interview with Seattle TV station KING and said that her husband is receiving the best care possible and she is “not going to allow anybody to shred [my] family on unfounded facts and malicious accusations.

“My husband is very happy and comfortable in our family and has told me time and time again that he wishes to remain under my care,” she said.

But Kerri responded, asking, “Why is she trying to block a doctor from seeing my father? If you truly love my father, you will do the right thing and allow him to get proper medical treatment.”

A Los Angeles Superior court judge issued the ruling, ordering Jean Kasem to allow Kerri Kasem’s doctor to see the ailing radio personality, and for Kerri to be allowed to see him. He also ordered Jean Kasem’s powers to determine her husband’s medical care suspended immediately, and for her to surrender his passport.

After seemingly going missing earlier in May, Kasem was found staying at the home of family friends near Seattle. Kitsap County sheriff’s deputies said that he “appeared to be not in distress. He couldn’t speak but he appeared to us to be cognizant of what was going on around him and who people were.”

Kasem now suffers from a form of dementia, but in his better days, he was known as the host of his Top 40 countdown shows. He was also the voice of Shaggy in Scooby Doo.
