Charlie Hunnam gave up one of the biggest roles of the decade and is still missing the character that was his for a month.
Irish actor Jamie Dornan took on the giant task of playing Christian Grey in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey, but he wasn’t the first choice. Charlie Hunnam was named as Grey but later dropped out due to his shooting schedule for Sons of Anarchy.

The 34-year-old is finally opening up about his decision to leave the important film series, calling it a “heartbreaking” choice he had to make.
“I felt like I had an interesting take on that character and felt like I could have done a good job of playing Christian Grey. Otherwise I wouldn’t have taken it on in the first place,” Hunnam reportedly told Life & Style at an event in Hollywood on Sunday.
After months of speculation on who would land the role, Fifty Shades fans were split on the decision to hire Hunnam as the fictional heartthrob. For Hunnam, the decision was an important one that he had to make.
“When you put the time into something like that and a character comes alive in your mind, it’s heartbreaking not to be able to play him,” he explained. “It was definitely kind of heartbreaking having to say goodbye to that character and not bring it to life.”
Hunnam and actress Dakota Johnson were announced in the roles by author E L James in September, and Hunnam made his announcement to leave only a month later. Jamie Dornan was announced as his replacement not long after.

Even though Hunnam will not be playing Christian Grey, he is still a fan of the story and will be first in line when the film is released.
“If they invite me to the premiere, I will go and see it there,” he said. “If not, I’ll go and buy some tickets on opening night.”
