Jason Derulo at the CMT Music Awards: Love it or hate it?

Jason Derulo‘s name on the guest list for the CMTs may have seemed like a mistake, but collaborations between country artists and artists from other genres are becoming more and more common.

The CMT Music Awards tried something a little new this year by inviting artists outside the genre to collaborate with the biggest country stars. John Legend and OneRepublic were also featured in country/non-country collaborations this year.

Jason Derulo was also invited to perform a collaboration with Luke Bryan and Florida Georgia Line at this year’s show.

“It’s really cool, man, because I’ve always dreamed of having my music cross boundaries and enter into different walks of life,” Derulo told Billboard of being invited to the CMTs. “Just because you love country music doesn’t mean you can’t love other genres of music. So the fact that they thought of my song to be at the CMTs is unbelievable. I’m just really excited more than anything and I have my cowboy hat on deck.”

Derulo performed Luke Bryan and FGL’s song “This Is How We Roll” before segueing to his own song, “Talk Dirty.” The three artists recorded a remix of “This Is How We Roll,” which they released on iTunes in collaboration with the CMT Music Awards. According to Billboard, they are hoping it will be just as popular as Nelly’s remix of Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise.”

On Wednesday night, the world of Twitter was a little confused as to why Derulo was even at the CMTs. “Why is Jason Derulo” began trending on Twitter, and the confused tweets were many. But some defended the performance, and other tweets were even explanatory.

Florida Georgia Line tweeted a link to the iTunes download later in the night.

Derulo began retweeting fans on Twitter, and he seemed genuinely excited to be invited to the show and to be able to collaborate with such talented musicians.

“I’m obsessed with it,” Derulo said of the new remix. “I know I’m in the thick of it, but I’ve listened to that song a million times, literally. I actually really, really love it. The melodies on that song are crazy and the marriage between that and bringing more of a pop flavor — I really think it’s something special. I hope that people like it half as much as I do. If people like it half as much as I do, we’re in good shape.”
