Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, attended events commemorating the 70th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy along with Queen Elizabeth and President Obama.

Queen Elizabeth, President Obama, Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, attended events commemorating the 70th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy and the soldiers who fought and lost their lives on D-Day.

The royal couple attended a tea party with veterans who valiantly fought that terrible day, and William gave a speech honoring those who gave their lives during the bloody battle.

“It is essential too that we never forget the friends and companions of those veterans who gave everything on June 6 and during the days and months that followed,” William said.

“They gave up everything for our freedom. They lie now together in the beautifully kept cemeteries that lie on the coast. However, today is also about the young. It is vital for them that they remember the sacrifice made by so many.

“As nations — British, French and others — there can be no stronger tie than recollection of what the people of Normandy and thousands of young Allied soldiers, sailors and airmen endured together 70 years ago, this day.”

Queen Elizabeth was also on hand to honor the special day, as was President Obama. Several attendees tweeted their photos of the royals as they walked the grounds and talked with veterans.

For the occasion, Kate recycled a custom-made Alexander McQueen coat we first saw her wear during the couple’s tour of New Zealand at the Blenheim War Memorial and Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre.
