Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel: “It was easy to root for us

Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel shared their lives for nearly 20 years, and Diggs is finally opening up about dealing with the shocking split.

Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel were a celebrity couple unlike many others. Although it’s not rare for actors working together to hook up, you don’t hear much about it from the world of Broadway.

Hey, John Travolta, who is Adele Dazeem? >>

Diggs and Menzel met while they were both starring in Rent in 1995 (both also starred in the film version of Rent in 2005). They were married in 2003 and have a 4-year-old son together. They split up in December, and Diggs is finally opening up about that decision and how he worried about it affecting their fans.

“I’d be lying if I said there weren’t times when I thought, ‘Oh, man, people are going to trip out [if we split]’. Maybe they thought it was cute that we met in Rent,” he told Redbook magazine. “There weren’t a lot of couples like us in the theater community — and I know there aren’t a lot of performers as talented as she is… and then you have the whole mixed [race] thing.”

Menzel spoke with People before the split and gave hints that not all was perfect in their relationship.

“We work at it. I’m not going to glamorize it or glorify it — we go through tough times like everybody else, but we love each other very much,” she said. “We try not to be away from each other for more than two weeks at a time, and we try to find new ways to communicate.”

Idina Menzel wants to star in Frozen on Broadway >>

Both actors are successful in their own rights — Diggs is now starring in Murder in the First on TNT, and Menzel will forever be known as the voice of Elsa from Frozen — and Diggs said they are focusing on their careers, but mostly on their son Walker.

“It was easy for people to root for us,” he said, according to E! News. “Right now, we’re still trying to figure out a lot of stuff because we’re on different coasts and our son is getting older.”
