You can always count on OK Go for a visually entertaining music video. In the past, the alt-rock band delivered a one-of-a-kind choreographed aerobic workout (“Here It Goes Again”), the most colorful tango to date (“Skyscrapers”) and has now dropped four minutes of eye-popping and mind-altering goodness for their latest video “The Writing’s on the Wall.”

In the video, which premiered on Tuesday, May 17, the foursome make their way through a gadget-filled Brooklyn lot, where the camera does an impressive one-take of the band in various visual eye tricks. And we mean it when we say that OK Go pulls out all the stops for the visuals. There are multicolored ensembles to blend in with props, upside down bicycling and tricked-out mirrors that unveil colorful rooms and props.

“The Writing’s on the Wall” took almost three weeks to assemble and required over 50 takes. However, OK Go’s new clip isn’t just about providing some off-the-wall visuals. It actually goes well with the song’s lyrical content, which tells the pre-breakup perspective of a couple seeing situations in different ways.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, front man and co-director Damian Kulash spoke about his vision for the piece, emphasizing the importance of connecting the visual and lyrical themes. “It was important to me that we didn’t add a layer of meaning that’s not already there,” Kulash explained. “We wanted to be able to have messages in there, but I didn’t want them going throughout the entire song in way that would make you feel like you were reading the whole time.”

“The Writing’s on the Wall” is the lead single off OK Go’s fourth studio album, Hungry Ghosts, which drops in October.
