The pop singer and her dad hadn’t talked much in recent years, and she only revealed after his death he had been dealing with his own issues. After he died, she told Good Morning America, “I’ve dealt with mental illnesses, and my father also dealt with mental illness. He wasn’t able to function in society very well,” she said. “I’m handling it OK. My father and I didn’t have the most ideal relationship. But at the end of the day, he’s still my dad. I grew up with him, and he’s a wonderful person.”
