Derek and Stiles may be no closer to hooking up than they were in Season 1, but fans of the show have their own interpretation of the best direction for the snarky duo’s relationship.
The Season 4 premiere of Teen Wolf airs Monday, but in case you’re in need of something to tide you over, we’ve got you covered.
The most wildly popular pairing since the early days of Teen Wolf was never star-crossed lovers Scott McCall (Tyler Posey) and now-deceased Allison Argent (Crystal Reed), or even Lydia Martin (Holland Roden) and volatile Jackson Whittemore (Colton Haynes). From their very first scene snarking back and forth at each other about a do-it-yourself arm amputation, it was Stiles Stilinski (Dylan O’Brien) and brooding werewolf Derek Hale (Tyler Hoechlin) who captured fans’ hearts and imaginations. Derek’s no-nonsense demeanor combined with Stiles’s inability to stop running his mouth has made for some of the series’ few light moments in the last four seasons, and the chemistry between the two actors is undeniable.

So what if they’ve never so much as kissed on the screen? So what if Derek has a habit of hooking up with ladies who always try to kill him and Stiles turns spluttery every time Lydia walks past him? Besides a handful of hints that Stiles is bisexual, there may not be a lot of evidence that Teen Wolf will ever take a romantic turn with these two — but we know repressed sexual tension when we see it.
Besides, that’s what fan fiction is for. If we’re never going to get our wishes fulfilled on the screen, here are the top five works that make the best case for giving it a shot.
1. Five Times the Sheriff Found Derek Hale in His Son’s Bedroom
Rated Teen. Stiles is constantly helping Derek research weird creatures, helping him get patched up after fights and smuggling him in through his window to try and keep it a secret from his father, the Beacon Hills sheriff. The sheriff’s finally figured out that there’s something supernatural going on in his town… and that there’s something more than friendship brewing between his son and the town recluse. A really nice believable evolution of friendship into something more, with bonus supportive parenting.
2. Can’t Be Hateful, Gotta Be Grateful
Rated Teen. Derek has no family left and thus nowhere to go on Thanksgiving. That means Stiles drags him along to spend the holidays at his grandmother’s house. Stiles’s grandmother instantly takes a liking to Derek and suspects that there’s more to Stiles’s feelings for him than meets the eye. As a bonus, we get a great interpretation of Stiles’s mysterious, much-discussed but not yet revealed first name.
3. The One Where Stiles Vets Derek’s Girlfriends
Rated Teen. Derek has notoriously terrible taste in women. Every time he’s ever tried to date someone, she’s ended up trying to kill him, his friends or his entire family. The group comes to a unanimous decision that from now on, Stiles should be in charge of digging up dirt on anyone Derek decides to date, and he eventually finds the perfect candidate: himself.
4. The Pros and Cons of Simulated Love
Rated Teen. Stiles has gotten really into playing The Sims lately. On a whim, he makes a Sim version of each member of Derek’s pack of werewolves… when he starts realizing exactly how much attention he’s paid to Derek to make such an accurate version. Embarrassment and adorable first kisses ensue when Derek discovers the computer game.
5. DILF
Rated Mature. This one takes place in an alternate universe where Derek isn’t a werewolf. Instead, he’s a single parent, raising his deceased sister’s kids Scott and Jackson all by himself. Enter Scott’s awesome new kindergarten teacher, Mr. Stilinski, who convinces Derek that he’s allowed to have a life for himself, too. This one’s close to novel length and great to load onto your iPad if you’re in the mood for a sweet, slow-burn romance with plenty of domesticity and a lot of adorable moments with a kindergarten-aged Scott.
