It’s a changing of the guard over at ABC News. On Wednesday, Diane Sawyer announced she would be leaving the anchor desk at World News.
The ABC News division is experiencing a game of musical chairs this week now that it has been announced Diane Sawyer is leaving World News in September. The 68-year-old anchor has been in this position for the last five years.
TV Guide shared the staff note from ABC News President James Goldston.

The letter read, “As much as she loved leading World News to new heights — with so much important, brilliant and impactful reporting and a No. 1 finish in the May sweep — Diane decided that now is the moment to concentrate full-time on tackling big issues in new ways.”
Sawyer will not be leaving the network, but will be focusing on producing and hosting specials for ABC. To replace the veteran journalist, ABC’s weekend anchor, David Muir, will step into her role.
In addition to that change, Good Morning America host George Stephanopoulos will take on more work at the network. He has been named chief anchor at ABC News while continuing his GMA and This Week duties.
