R. Kelly opens up about transgender son — sort of

R. Kelly has never publicly talked about his transgender son, but said he loves his children “no matter what they are or who they are.”

Earlier this month, it was revealed that R. Kelly’s 14-year-old child came out as transgender and changed his name to Jay, but his dad wasn’t offering much support. R. Kelly spoke with radio station 107.5 WGCI in Chicago, but didn’t open up completely about the news.

“You don’t really wanna open it up by saying my daughter is becoming my son,” he said. “Don’t even give the blogs that kind of credit.”

According to MTV, Jay has spoken about his life on his Ask.fm account, but R. Kelly didn’t exactly acknowledge his son in his interview. He actually almost tried to downplay the news.

“Always believe what you see, with your own eyes, that is,” he said. “Always believe what you see. That’s the best way to go about this business. I’ve heard a lot of things about a lot of people. It was never true.”

Jay had said, “My dad has not reached out.” But he added that his mother “was very proud of me.”

But R. Kelly did open up about his personal life and explained that everything he has done, he has done for his kids. That includes getting rid of his mansion for a more modest home so he could save money.

“You save money so your kids can go to college — no matter what they are or who they are,” he said. “They’re still your kids; you love ’em, you gotta support them. At the end of the day, it’s not about me no more. It’s about three lovely, lovely kids that I’m in love with and that’s in love with me.”
