We do our best to get to the bottom of the great mystery in the Mystery Girls episode: What happened to the pilot?
It’s happened time and time again, but I don’t think I will ever understand why a network will skip a show’s pilot episode and show another one instead. But that’s exactly what occurred with the premiere of ABC Family’s Mystery Girls. They didn’t just skip one episode either — they skipped three. According to IMDb, the episode that aired as the premiere, called “Death Becomes Her,” was actually meant to be Episode 4.

Pilot? What pilot?
Just last week we posted a sneak peek of the premiere of this new TV show and it is actually pretty promising. I have to admit that I am a huge Tori Spelling fan and can’t get enough of any of her reality shows. Whether she’s running a B&B, starting a party-planning business, playing with her four gorgeous kids or, sadly, even fighting with her husband, I watch it all.
So I was excited to see this new series and wanted to see how Spelling and her old Beverly Hills 90210 buddy Jennie Garth would do with a cute little sitcom of their own. I thought the premise was adorable and figured it would fit in perfectly with the type of shows seen on ABC Family.
Then the episode opened and nothing that had been promised in the preview was anywhere to be seen. The girls were supposed to be estranged friends and a case was supposed to bring them together, thanks to a mega fan named Nick. But here they were already working together and Nick was their assistant. I wanted to know more about all of them, but instead we dove straight into the new story.
Take a breath, show
I know a sitcom has to deliver a lot of laughs in a little bit of time but some of the jokes felt a little rushed in this episode. Maybe it was just because I was still disappointed over missing the pilot. I just felt like I was trying to play catch-up with everything that was going on, some of the time.

What I liked
Believe it or not, there were actually a few elements that I did like. First of all, Nick was a total hoot and I laughed more at him than anyone else on the show. I could seriously watch him all day.
Also, the girls had some chemistry going on and when I wasn’t feeling left behind or confused about what was happening, I actually cracked up at them a few times, too.
The everyone-thinks-Holly-is-dead story was worth a few giggles. I liked how Holly and Nick were happily selling off some of her possessions and though Charlie didn’t approve, she found a way to get something out of Holly’s fake death, too. The sex tape felt a little boring until it turned out that it was Charlie in the tape and not Holly. That was a twist that I didn’t see coming and definitely made the story more enjoyable. In the end, I decided that I would give Mystery Girls another shot to win me over. We’ll see what happens with the next episode.
