Gary Oldman took his dual campaign of apology and movie publicity to Jimmy Kimmel Live — but can we trust what he says?
Gary Oldman is on a campaign to save his reputation after an ill-advised, anti-Semitic defense of Mel Gibson in a recent Playboy interview. Last night’s stop: Jimmy Kimmel Live.
While the actor has already issued a formal apology to the Anti-Defamation League, he discussed the misstep with Kimmel while promoting his new flick Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
“It was an article I did with Playboy, and I said some things that were poorly considered. Once I saw it in print, I saw that it was insensitive, pernicious and ill-informed,” Oldman explained.
“I am a public figure, I should be an example and inspiration, and I am an a******. I am 56. I should know better. I extend my apology and my love and best wishes to my fan base.”
Oldman continued, “I appreciate you having me here and extending your hospitality and to put me in this seat once again. And it gives me the opportunity to say to those people that I, from my heart, I am profoundly, profoundly sorry… especially to the fans, as they have been so incredible to me and loyal. They call me Team Oldman. I feel like I let them down.”
The actor added that, “Sometimes we are asked to be social and cultural commentators, and I am not. I landed both feet in a hornets’ nest. It came over in a certain way, and for that I am deeply sorry.”

Kimmel, the consummate professional, said all the right things while still saying what many of us are thinking: Can we believe Oldman’s apology is sincere?
“I am so happy that someone has to apologize on this show, and it’s not me for once,” Kimmel joked, adding, “I think it is important when someone apologizes to accept their apology. You are a great actor, so we can’t trust anything you say!”
