Elton John is a big proponent of gay marriage, and he says Jesus would have agreed, because, “he was all about love and compassion and forgiveness and trying to bring people together.”
Elton John is planning a wedding to his longtime partner David Furnish, and he doesn’t see why so many people have a problem with it. The singer spoke with U.K.’s Sky News, and said he thinks Jesus would have some interesting perspectives on the way of the world today.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is a fan of Elton John >>
“These are old and stupid things, and the Church hierarchy might be up in arms about it — the traditionalists — but times have changed,” he explained. “We live in a different time.”
John said not only would Jesus Christ support gay marriage, but he’d also want to get rid of celibacy for clergy members as well.
“If Jesus Christ was alive today, I cannot see him, as the Christian person that he was and the great person that he was, saying this could not happen,” John continued. “He was all about love and compassion and forgiveness and trying to bring people together, and that is what the Church should be about.”
But despite what John feels about Christians, he said he is excited about the direction the church is going — thanks to Pope Francis, who is focusing on love among members of the Catholic Church.
“He’s excited me so much by his humanity and taking everything down to the humility of faith,” he said. “It’s all basically about love and taking everybody in inclusiveness.”

Back in 2010, John talked to Parade magazine about Jesus as well, saying, “On the cross, he forgave the people who crucified him. Jesus wanted us to be loving and forgiving. I don’t know what makes people so cruel.”
John and Furnish are planning to marry in 2015.
