Music review: Usher gets funky with Nicki Minaj on new single

Usher and Nicki Minaj are at it again. On Tuesday, July 8, the hip-hop heavyweights dropped their new collabo “She Came to Give It to You,” the second single off Usher’s eighth studio album.

Over a retro disco-esque beat courtesy of Pharrell, Usher sings the story about a gal who catches his attention in the club. In similar fashion to Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” the R&B singer’s voice takes a smooth glide across the mid-tempo thumper. “Girl, it ain’t what you do/ It’s what you do tonight/ And there ain’t no shortcuts/ In doing something right,” he croons during the chorus.

Nicki Minaj comes in roughly two minutes into the track and reminds us why her slick and witty flow remain supreme. Spitting about her dominance (“Got ’em under pressure/ When your girl come through Nicki gon’ crush her”) and a diss or two (“You only last six seconds like a vine”), the Harajuku Barbie’s verse reminds us of her debut days when she lent a few memorable bars to her friends.

“She Came to Give It to You” isn’t exactly innovative, especially after how Skateboard P’s production has hit everyone from Kylie Minogue to Ed Sheeran this past year. But with Ursh’s vocals and Nicki’s spunk, it has the ideal ingredients for a crossover hit.

“She Came to Give It to You” marks Usher and Nicki’s second collaboration following their 2010 team-up for the song “Lil Freak.” Minaj’s guest appearance adds even more star power to the singer’s upcoming LP. Usher has already worked with Chris Brown, Ed Sheeran, Skrillex and Juicy J on the project, which is due out before the end of 2014.
