Rob Lowe, king of sex tape scandals, is hilarious in Sex Tape

An original member of the ’80s Brat Pack, Robe Lowe’s baby blue eyes, square jaw and jutting chin still entice women of all ages. But his acting career was nearly ruined by a sex tape scandal back in 1988. Lowe’s career endured, however, and now the scandal has come full circle with his decision to appear in the new film, Sex Tape.

Back in the 1980s, home video cameras became widely available to the American consumer, but they were nothing like our cell phone cameras are now. They were big, bulky contraptions and used videotapes where the actual tape was half an inch wide.

While Rob Lowe was attending the 1988 Democratic Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, in support of Michael Dukakis, he videotaped himself having sex with two teenage girls. One was 19, the other 16. However, in Florida, 16 is the age of consent, so technically there was nothing illegal about the ménage à trois. But when the tape of his hotel romp got leaked, the media had a field day.

If you’ve seen Lowe’s tape, you know it’s grainy, blurry, poorly lit and practically unwatchable compared to some of today’s sex tapes that almost look like they were shot in high def by comparison.

Ironically, Lowe is currently starring in the new R-rated comedy, Sex Tape, as Hank, Annie’s (Cameron Diaz) seemingly conservative new boss. Hank reveals his wild side when Annie and her husband, Jay (Jason Segel), show up at his mansion one night, hoping to retrieve an iPad they believe contains their own three-hour carnal adventure.

While Jay searches Hank’s home, Hank convinces Annie to drink Scotch and snort cocaine — another irony, considering Lowe has been sober for 24 years.

Lowe is delightful in the role of Hank, however, exhibiting an almost Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde behavior that is as funny as it is shocking. Lowe has clearly come into his comedic own.

Perhaps Lowe can thank sobriety and age for having helped the bad-boy Brat-Packer evolve. The fact that he’s able to poke fun at his past proves he’s moved on from it. However, at the Sex Tape movie premiere, Lowe told E! Online that he has “fond, fond memories” of his sex tape. Maybe some things never change.
