Charlie Hunnam still regrets quitting Fifty Shades of Grey

Fifty Shades of Grey fans had mixed reactions when Charlie Hunnam was cast as Christian Grey, but he was gone almost as soon as he appeared. Only a month after being cast in the role, Hunnam quit the movie, citing schedule commitments with his show Sons of Anarchy.

But Hunnam is again speaking about the film and his regrets on quitting the project.

“I’m just really excited to see it. I was just really, really invested and wanted to work with [director] Sam [Taylor-Johnson] and play that character,” he said at a Fox press tour, according to CBS News. “I’m really, really curious.”

The actor also commented on Fifty Shades of Grey‘s reputation as “mommy porn.” He said, “I think people really do that book a disservice when they reduce it to that type of talk. What [E L James] actually created is a really sophisticated dynamic and presented it in a package which was accessible to people who normally would be terrified of that subject. Actually what she did was pretty brilliant.”

Hunnam, who was to play opposite Dakota Johnson in the film, was replaced by Jamie Dornan shortly after he dropped out. His decision to focus on his other projects was “pretty heartbreaking” to him. But he added that Dornan is “probably a lot better looking and a lot smoother” than he is.

“I would’ve brought a certain rugged charm to [the role],” Hunnam said, “but believe me, he’s going to do just fine.”

Fifty Shades of Grey will be in theaters in February 2015. You can see Hunnam in the final season of Sons of Anarchy, which kicks off on Sept. 9, 2014.
