We all know that Nick Jonas has had his share of physical growth courtesy of one little tweet, but after a listen to his new song, “Chains,” it’s clear he’s done some evolving in the musical department, too.
On Thursday afternoon, July 24, the youngest of the three Jonas brothers dropped a brand-new track in partnership with Complex. “Chains” is a contemporary-sounding pop&B-flavored mid-tempo cut, which was produced by Jason Evigan.
On the track, Nick confesses his bind to a relationship with a girl who he knows isn’t good for him. While he might not have been entirely happy with the girl, the product of his pain clearly turned into one heck of a song, especially the hook. As the music slowly pauses, Jonas gets seductive as he growls, “Trying to break the chains, but the chains only bring me.” You might expect a dubstep-filled breakdown afterwords, but listeners are treated to a cinematic eruption of eerie chanting, thumping bass and everything you wished 2013 Justin Timberlake came back with. Jonas’ new song also means a new label for the former Disney idol: He announced that he’s Island Def Jam’s newest signee.

In an e-mail with Complex, the JoBro told the outlet that the track is something everyone can relate to because of common love struggles. “Everyone has their own chains, in life and in love, that bind them and this song embodies that feeling,” he explained. “I’m excited to be back to share this song with the world.”
In addition to his slew of fans, Nick’s brother’s former girlfriend, Demi Lovato, sent a congratulatory tweet out shortly after the tune made its way to the internet.
