Everyone’s favorite sponge is back, and this time he’s stepping out of his animated world right into ours.
It’s been 10 years since the first SpongeBob SquarePants movie came out, and now Nickelodeon and Paramount Animation have released the first official trailer for its sequel, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of Water.
But, unlike the first film, Sponge out of Water doesn’t take place in the safe, animated world of Bikini Bottom. No, this time our oceanic protagonists are traveling to the real world — in 3-D.

Antonio Banderas stars as Alameda Jack, a particularly salty pirate who is after a magic book that helps turn his wildest plans into reality. Unfortunately, SpongeBob possesses the final page of the book, meaning the pirate must attack Bikini Bottom to use the book’s full power. After Jack leaves Bikini Bottom a burned-out shell of what it once was, SpongeBob and his buddies decide they must get the book themselves to vanquish the evil pirate.
Although we love the animated cartoons, there’s something a little creepy about seeing them strolling around in their live-action forms.
And did we mention the muscles?
Somehow during their pursuit of Alameda Jack, SpongeBob and company are able to transform themselves into superheroes, turning their soft squishy bodies into weirdly muscled masses. SpongeBob with a six-pack? What is happening?

SpongeBob’s superhero name is Invincibubble and — as seen in the trailer — he can now make dangerous flying objects float away in the safety of a bubble. Patrick turns into Mr. Superawsomeness (and develops a serious ice cream fetish), while Mr. Krabs maximizes his pincer powers by turning into Sir Pinch-a-lot.
All told, the trailer packs plenty of laughs, and its downright strangeness has our curiosity piqued, but we can’t make up our minds if the live-action vibe works for us or just gives us the heebie-jeebies.
