Jada Pinkett Smith on marriage: Break the rules and discover a whole new world

It’s no secret that Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have adopted an unconventional parenting strategy, which has come under fire from critics on numerous occasions. But just like their parenting style, Will and Jada themselves appear to have an unconventional relationship. And when it comes to marriage, they’re not afraid to break the rules.

Not long ago, the couple’s daughter Willow made headlines for all the wrong reasons when a picture of her sharing a bed with her older friend, Moisés Arias, made it onto the web, bringing Will and Jada’s parenting techniques into question once again.

However, Jada is convinced the world is overreacting, and while she previously slammed suggestions that anything was wrong with the pic, she’s now opened up about it again to Net-a-Porter’s The Edit.

“Just don’t pollute something that’s not dirty,” the actress said.

“I want my kids to be happy and I want them to be themselves,” she continued. “I was saying to a friend the other day, ‘Remember, our kids are not us.’ They’re not. Sometimes we’re trying to fix things that happened to us or projecting [onto them], and that’s a terrible, terrible trap.”

Jada and her husband have an unconventional view when it comes to parenting, but it’s something they are both very proud of.

Speaking of her husband, there have been rumors in recent months that her relationship with Smith has become rocky, but that’s not the case.

“We used to have all these rules, [but] as you go on in your relationship, you just get into a flow,” she said of her 17 years of marriage.

“Will, to me, encompasses everything,” she lovingly said. “It’s almost as if calling him ‘my husband’ is too small of a word for what he means in my life… I think I had a very stuck idea of what a husband looks like, what a wife should be. Once I broke all of that, a whole new world opened for me and man, oh, man, I got to see him in all his glory. And so that’s what it’s evolved into. And I’m just ecstatic about it.”
