Ready for your morning announcements, kids? We only have one today, but it’s a doozy. The Disney Channel has officially announced that it’s renewing Girl Meets World for a second season. That’s right, Cory and Topanga fans: We’re not done with the Matthews family just yet.
Just for you: Girl Meets World cast spills Season 1 spoilers >>
“The series swiftly became a favorite of kids and their parents, many of whom grew up with Boy Meets World,” said Adam Bonnett, vice president of original programming for Disney Channels Worldwide. “We’re looking forward to watching Riley Matthews and Maya Hart make the world their own, as Cory and Topanga teach them life lessons along the way.”
Proof of viewers’ affection can be found in the numbers. According to the Disney Channel, Girl Meets World has continually ranked No. 1 with kids 2-11, kids 6-11 and tweens 9-14 since the show’s June premiere. Their mobile viewing viewing numbers are particularly impressive, spiraling up to nearly 5 million views since it first appeared online.
VIDEO: Time to solve some Boy Meets World mysteries >>
The Boy Meets World spinoff had us giddy from the moment we knew it was a possibility, and it quickly grabbed us by the heartstrings the minute it premiered. While Riley Matthews and her troubled BFF, Maya Hart, have a relationship similar to Cory and Shawn’s, the best moments happen between Cory and his practically adoptive daughter. Just like the original Matthews family was always accepting of Shawn, we witness that same love given tenfold to Riley’s best friend. Corey was always a sensitive kid and the more grown-up, fatherly version is just the same. And while Girl Meets World is still clearly a kids show with younger main characters, Disney knows its audience well enough to perfectly balance the kid drama with a warm and funny depiction of the marriage between Cory and Topanga. Girl Meets World is sheer entertainment perfection for the entire family. We’re thrilled to know the Matthews family et al will return for another round.
Class dismissed… for now.
