Robert Downey Jr.’s son charged in drug possession case

Robert Downey Jr.’s son Indio has been charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, stemming from his arrest in late June.

In addition to the felony charge, the Iron Man actor’s eldest child has also been charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, E! News reports.

Indio is facing a maximum sentence of three years and six months in prison if convicted on both counts, E! News states. However, because he is a first-time offender, he is automatically entitled to a drug diversion program. He is due in court later this month for arraignment.

As previously reported, Indio was arrested in a car with two other people when cops allegedly found cocaine and drug paraphernalia on him during a traffic stop on June 29.

The 20-year-old musician was booked in the Los Angeles County jail and released on $10,250 bail. Shortly afterward, he voluntarily checked into a treatment facility with the full support of his father Downey Jr. The star himself has famously battled with substance abuse issues, causing his life to spiral out of control and leading him even to spend time in prison.

At the time of his son’s arrest, with whom he shares with ex-wife Deborah Falconer, Downey Jr. released a statement thanking the cops for their intervention.

“Unfortunately there’s a genetic component to addiction and Indio has likely inherited it. Also, there is a lot of family support and understanding, and we’re all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he’s capable of being. We’re grateful to the Sheriff’s department for their intervention, and believe Indio can be another recovery success story instead of a cautionary tale.”
