After fighting since 2008 to keep their marriage together, Téa Leoni and David Duchovny have finally thrown in the towel and filed for divorce.

Leoni and Duchovny, who were married for 17 years, filed for divorce in June and cited “an irretrievable breakdown” as the reason for their permanent separation, according to TMZ via People magazine. A source close to the couple also confirmed with People that the couple actually split months ago.

Although Leoni will have primary physical custody of their two children, Kyd, 12, and Madelaine, 15, the two entertainers will share joint custody of their offspring. Duchovny will be required to pay $8,000 a month in child support, along with a whopping $40,000 a month in spousal support. In addition to the monthly support, the former X-Files star will also be required to pay for his children’s educational expenses.

Duchovny and Leoni’s marriage has been a public roller-coaster ride since August 2008, when Duchovny entered a rehab facility to treat sex addiction. “I have voluntarily entered a facility for the treatment of sex addiction,” the Californication actor said at the time in a statement through his lawyer. “I ask for respect and privacy for my wife and children as we deal with this situation as a family.”

The couple announced their first split in October of 2008, just weeks after Duchovny had been released from treatment. Around the same time, rumors began to swirl that Duchovny had been sleeping with his tennis instructor, Edit Pakay, causing the breakup. A spokesperson for the actor denied the affair, but Pakay reportedly did not. “If you want to write that we have an affair, then fine,” Pakay said at the time, according to The Mail On Sunday. “I will not argue against it. Nor will David. But he cannot talk about it because he is going through a divorce, nor can I.” That same month, rumors also surfaced that Leoni was actually having an affair with her Smell of Success co-star, Billy Bob Thornton, but the gossip was quickly squashed by Thornton.

Leoni and Duchovny reconciled soon after their separation in 2008. They called it quits again in June 2011 and quickly got back together the following month.
