Teens get a bad rap for being shallow, but if last night’s Teen Choice Awards are any indication, young stars are a lot more introspective than we give them credit for.

In her acceptance speech for Choice Summer Song for “Really Don’t Care,” Demi Lovato proved that she does, in fact, care. A good deal, actually — she told the crowd, “Every single one of you deserves to live a happy and healthy and incredible life… so be the best that you can be in everything, because your dreams can come true if you work hard for them.”

Acknowledging that style is a means of expression, Candie’s Choice Style Icon Zendaya reminded fans that while she may look like she has it all together, she’s still using style to discover her own voice. “I’m still trying to find out who I am, too,” she revealed to her screaming fans. “Every single day, I’m trying to figure out who I am, and we don’t need to rush. We don’t have to grow up too quick. Embrace growing up and finding out who you are, ’cause it’s a beautiful journey. All right?”

Shailene Woodley knows a thing or two about strong women. Not only is she one herself, but she won Choice Movie Actress: Action/Adventure for playing one, too — Tris Prior in Divergent. So her sentiments rang especially true when she asserted, “You can be brave and jump off trains, but the truest form of courage and bravery is to wake up single every day and be ourselves.”

Ariana Grande, who adorably brought her grandmother, “Nonna,” as her date, shared some wise words of advice for her fans during her acceptance speech for Choice Single: Female Artist. “To all the teens out there who love to sing, who love to dance, who love to act, don’t ever stop,” the “Problem” singer stressed, adding, “I was told no so many times, and I never thought I’d be able to do what I’m doing now every single day. I didn’t take no for an answer, and my Nonna taught me to do that.”

Woodley wasn’t finished offering up pearls of wisdom just yet. When she took the stage to accept the surfboard for Choice Movie: Drama, the insightful actress had this to say about starring in The Fault in Our Stars. “The biggest thing I took away from this movie is that all we have is moments, and it’s really our job to wake up each and every day and be so grateful for those moments.”

Woodley’s costar in The Fault in Our Stars, Ansel Elgort, weighed in on the importance of the film’s message as well. “We wanted to bring these characters to life in the most honest way,” Elgort said, “and make it a story about love and living every moment like it’s your last, and not worrying about what’s gonna happen in the future. We didn’t want to make it a story about sickness or about cancer, and it wasn’t that — and we’re so happy that it wasn’t… because this movie is really about love.”

Hinting at the personal strife she has experienced in the past month, Ultimate Choice winner Selena Gomez thanked her fans for always reminding her of what really matters in life. “Amid all the stuff we deal with personally, you remind me of what’s important,” an emotional Gomez said, “and that’s giving and loving and caring about each other. And I’m not trying to preach or any of that, it’s just that you guys make me better and I really appreciate everything you’ve done.”
