Fans are crying foul as the Teen Choice Awards fine print makes its way around Twitter and the rest of the internet.
Does Selena Gomez’s Teen Choice Awards speech hint at personal strife? >>
Turn out that Teen Choice isn’t so much about the teens’ choice. Those 164 million votes cast and the celebs encouraging you to select their name may be more about promotion for the show than actually counting your voice.
The disclaimer on the show and the Teen Choice Awards website states, “Winners for the Teen Choice Awards are determined using the votes cast on the site. Votes are tabulated electronically and winners [are] determined based on the nominees in each category with the highest number of eligible votes. Teenasaurus Rox reserves the right to choose the winners from the top four vote generators.”
This suggests official winners are selected by producers, not fans.
QUIZ: Dressing their age? Can you guess the age of these Teen Choice nominees? >>
According to The Washington Post, Cameron Dallas, winner of the new category Choice Viner, posted on Twitter that he’d been selected as the winner six days before the show aired on Sunday. “It’s funny how they told me I won the viner award 6 days before the voting ended and made the runner up still for them.”
Though Dallas quickly took down the message, screen grabs for the post can still be found online.
Another nominee, Matt Espinosa, in the Choice Web Star: Male category agreed with Dallas. “Basically they picked the people almost 6 days before voting was done and used all of us for promotion,” Espinosa said on Twitter.

Though the disclaimer was included at the end of last year’s show as well, the truth behind the votes seemed to have gathered steam this year thanks to the nominees in the web category who brought it up to their large fan bases. They don’t call them web stars because they aren’t influential, that’s for sure.
